Interview with the wonderful Swedish dj Electra Hultin, female symbol of the Stockholm crew .”WAV Sthlm”.
1. When and why did you start pursuing a career as a dj?
It was ages ago, a friend liked my music taste and wanted me to play at his venue. I had said no several times because I didn’t want to be in the center. But he kept asking and since I love music, eventually I said yes. While I was playing, a booker for another place heard the music and told my friend that he wanted to book this dj. And then, when I was playing at the next place, there was a booker for a third place that heard the music and wanted to book. And on the third place, in the crowd there was a booker for a fourth place and so on and on. And that’s the way it’s been ever since. I’ve paused some years here and there when I’ve had a lot to do at university or at work, but it’s always equally fun to pick it up again.
2. Which artists inspired you the most initially?
It’s always been more about specific tracks inspiring me more than the artist per se. When I was a kid it was “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and “Flashlight” by The Parliament – ah, and “Rockit” of course ( Herbie Hancock ) but I also loved classical music and jazz ( I was a weird kid ).
And today when I listen it’s the same thing, I have specific tracks that inspire me the most for a certain period of time. At the moment, I’m very much inspired by Boston 168 – “909 Therapy“.
3. Do you think the fact that you’re a girl as had an influence on your career?
Only in the sense that I might have been an early influencer in some areas. For instance, when I set out to become an astrophysicist, I enrolled for the physics programme at university. We weren’t so many girls back in the day but I guess the work we put in, in showing the world that physics is not a gender-specific skill, normalized peoples notion of women in physics. As was the case when I later started working as an analyst at a bank. And also with the dj-ing. But since I grew up around guys I haven’t really thought about this until later. My family raised me quite gender neutral so I’ve just been walking around in this world doing whatever pleases me, haha!
4. What does music mean to you?
If I start answering this I will be writing forever. Music means more than words could ever explain.
5. How would you describe Stockholm’s music and Club scene?
Thanks to the police harrassing the club scene for many years, we now have a quite flourishing and organized underground scene, which is wonderful. When people come to Sweden nowadays I almost rather recommend them to go underground than to a regular venue.
6. When was your first time behind a consolle? What are your memories of that night?
See question 1. 🙂 One thing I can add is that when the booker came up to me and asked if I wanted to play at the other venue, I said no. At the same time my friend said (louder) “-OF COURSE SHE WANTS TO!” because he knew I would weasel my way out of it otherways, hahah! I am forever grateful to him for that.
7. Which is your favorite musical genre to play? During which track do you go crazy the most?
That would be techno. There’s no specific track that I go crazy to the most but I have a crate of tracks that I like very much: one of them is “Vimana” by Canato [ Discernible Records ], great track!
Regarding genres, I also have a house act called Good Things but I’ve had too much work lately so it’s been temporarily on hold. I’ll let you know more about it when I pick it up again.
8. Are you planning on trying out producing as well?
Yes I am, we will see if I manage to get to it in 2019. I have a tendency to say yes to everything because it sounds like so much fun but I forget that I have no time managing skills whatsoever. I would really need a secretary to keep track for/of me. My life is a constant battle between all the things I want to do and the few hours there actually are to do them. But I guess it’s the same for everybody.
9. On March 19th it will be two years since the beginning of “WAV Sthlm”, what’s your relationship like with the crew and in particular with Billie Jo who was our guest recently?
Yes, we are celebrating with a 2 year anniversary party (join us!) on the 16th of March. Can’t wait!!! ❤
We all are friends since long before we started .WAV and most of us have known eachother for like half a decade or so! Awesome friends, Billie being one of my closest.
10. Do you have any events planned for the near future?
Yes, going skiing! Me and Billie have a gig in the Swedish alps. Can’t wait to hit the slopes and the decks!
